Edith Cavell World War I nurse and humanitarian

In 1907 I became the first matron of the Brussels hospital. There I helped improve nursing standards. During, German occupation of Belgium in 1914, I helped 200 Allied soldiers escape as part of an underground groupinto the Netherlands. The Germans arrested me then sent me to execution.

My name is Edith Cavell, I am a nurse for the German military. I will help people that are wounded. I will write to family. I miss you and don't know when I'll be back home.If I even make it home. I'm scared and I don't know what will happen. I will not get home for Christmas. I wish I could make it home for Christmas but it doesn't look good. I wish I could see you guys. It is cold and we don't have any heat or beds. We sleep on the ground of Austria Hungry. We are against Austria Hungry.

Week 1-Dec. 8th
Several alliances made between countries began the chain of events that lead to World War 1. Out of all nations, Germany was the best prepared. Our govermant had long plannned for war. Germany had it's own strategy called the Schlieffen Plan. The plan was to destroy the enemy quickly and surround them.

A student by the name of Gavrillo Princip sparked the war. He was part of the militant group called the "Black Hand". On June 22nd 1914 Princip assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Germany assured Austria of full support, and the Austrians sent Serbia an ultimatum that Serbia that they could not accept. All major powers then acted with speed thinking that milltary advantage depended on rapid mobilazation of thier armies. Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia then mobilized its troops against the central powers. On August 1st Germany warned Russia to demobilize, when no response was received, war was declared on Russia and their allies.

Week 2- Dec. 15th
The Germans battle plan was the Schlieffen Plan. The Germans had been developing plans for invasions into every European country. Germany's hope was to end the war quickly by attacking France first and overrunning it. Then getting Russia before they had a chance to mobilize. To prevent England from entering the war, we made it look as if Russia had really started the war. Geramany's motto during the war. "Every shot a Russian, every thrust a French, every third a Brit!"

Propaganda posters were used by all nations who participated in World War One between 1914 and 1918. These posters were used as a means of justification to their people and also to support thier military campaign.

Russia declared a cease fire on December 15th, 1917. Russia lost a great amount of territory and posed a serious danger to the Allied forces. It's estimated that 4.7 millions Russians had died in the war. They had left the Western fronts open, and Germany took all of the Russians equipment.

United States declared war on Germany. Due to the attacks of many ship including the Lusitania, where
128 Americans died. Plus the exposure of the Zimmermann telegram. It was a telegram that was to offer Mexico financial aid if it allied with Germany against the United States. As well as help them regain some of their lost territory.

Week 4- Jan.5th

The treaty of Versailies known to us Germans as a Diktat, left us as a nation feeling unfairly treated. When we Germans heard the terms many became very angry. We were told as a nation that we would be consulted about this treaty. We were not! We had no other choice. We had to sign the treaty or be invaded by the Allies. At this point we were unable to continue the war. The German goverment declared this war, not the people of Germany. Why must we be punished? Much land was taken from Germany such as Alsace-Lorraine,Eupen,Malmedy,Northern Schleswig,Hultschin,West Prussia,Posen and Upper Silesia. As well as our army, tanks and ships. We were permitted 6 naval ships though. Nor were we permitted an airforce or submarines. We also had to admit to starting the war and pay for damages to our Allies caused during the war. An estimated 6,600 million. Most of which went to France and Belgium, to rebuild their infrastructure. It left us without a means to rebuild our economy, with the loss of our industrial territory. We were headed for financial ruins. We were not permitted to unite with Austria, yet another means to keep us in an economic slump. "Gott mit uns" ( God with us)
